What external testing adds to the decision
RTINGS tested the firm side of Plank Luxe in its April 2026 review and reviewed the extra-firm side separately. Its firm-side findings describe quick recovery when moving and effective motion dissipation, but weaker pressure accommodation for lighter side sleepers. The review also cautions that cooling may be insufficient for people who are particularly heat-sensitive. This evidence changes the shortlist in a useful way. Luxe can be worth investigating when you dislike a surface that holds an impression as you turn, yet a side sleeper who needs substantial shoulder cushioning should not interpret responsiveness as pressure relief. Those are different properties. Similarly, a mattress can reduce how widely movement spreads while still feeling springy directly under the person moving.
We do not copy the test scores into a shared ranking with manufacturer firmness numbers. More usefully, take the specific tradeoff into your trial: assess turning, your normal contact points and partner movement independently. Test the actual side you intend to keep facing up.
Three extra-firm buying scenarios
You want to stop feeling engulfed
First separate slow surface recovery from deeper sinking. Luxe's tested responsiveness makes it relevant to the first concern, while the original foam route gives a different support construction to investigate. Compare a turn from back to side after settling into the mattress. The better option should make movement comfortable without creating a new pressure problem when you stop moving.
Your partner wants a softer mattress
Flipping either Plank changes the bed for both sleepers. It is not a split-firmness adjustment. Try the firm side together before assuming the extra-firm side will satisfy a compromise. If one person still needs much more cushioning, consider a different configuration or split arrangement. Buying a thick topper immediately also changes the very flat-surface feel that brought you to this category.
Your existing mattress has developed a dip
A new hard-feeling bed may appear to solve the problem at first, but check the foundation and center support before ordering. If an inadequate base contributed to the old problem, changing mattress brands without correcting it leaves an unresolved condition. Measure the full bed height too: a thicker mattress can make sitting and standing different even when the surface feels appropriately firm.

The inspected Amazon copy also uses inconsistent feel language. We retain the manufacturer's firm/extra-firm distinction and treat the selected size, model and seller as the offer details to resolve. Do not compare a Luxe checkout total against an original Plank promotional price and call the difference a discount on the same product.
Why we are not ranking these by a 10-point score
Plank's product FAQs and its model-comparison support article give differing firmness ranges. The original product page even extends one range beyond ten while describing a ten-point scale. These are marketing descriptions, not a consistent measurement system.
The stable distinction is that both products provide firm and extra-firm surfaces, with different support cores. We preserve that distinction instead of turning incompatible numbers into a precise “hardest mattress” result. A single person's report that one side feels softer also cannot calibrate the whole market.
Decide whether extra-firm is actually your target
Write down what you want to change about your current bed. If you like very little surface give and actively dislike deep cushioning, this category is a reasonable comparison. If the problem is a worn dip, a damaged frame or an uncomfortable pillow, a harder new mattress may leave the underlying issue unresolved.
For side sleeping, give particular attention to the contact areas that need room to settle. Keep the base and bedding consistent, identify which side is up, and record the effect of changing sides. Do not attempt to open the cover or modify internal layers to manufacture a third feel.
