A practical reference

Measure the frame, then check the requirements

Use one unit throughout and record the exact mattress and frame models. Nominal sizes such as Queen are a starting point; measure the space the mattress actually sits in.

1. Measure the usable interior

Top view: inner width between side rails, inner length between end rails, and a center support railInner widthInner lengthCenter support rail
Schematic, not to scale. Measure between inside faces, not across the outside frame.

Measure inside width at the head, middle and foot; keep the smallest usable value. Measure inside length and note corner brackets, upholstery or hardware that reduce the space. Compare with the exact mattress dimensions and any fit tolerance specified by the manufacturers.

Also record the outside frame dimensions for room planning. A headboard or footboard may extend beyond the mattress footprint.

2. Measure the clear slat gap

Side detail, not to scale. The clear gap is edge to edge, not center to center.

Measure several gaps and record the largest, along with slat width and thickness. Check the required slat spacing for your exact mattress. Inspect the center rail and any required legs; note missing parts, loose connections or legs that do not reach the floor.

There is no single spacing limit for every mattress. For example, Helix publishes its own base requirements. Use the relevant maker’s instructions before changing the support surface. Source checked September 12, 2026.

3. Keep fit, support and delivery checks together

Record inner length and width; largest slat gap; slat dimensions; center rail and leg condition; frame capacity and what that limit includes; and the manufacturer instruction link. Ask the manufacturer to resolve any missing requirement before treating the setup as compatible.

A mattress fitting inside the frame does not confirm structural support. Neither check confirms that the packaged mattress can turn through your hallway. Record the delivery route separately.
