Best Daybed & Trundle Mattresses: Fit, Feel & Closing Clearance

By MattressProducts.com Editorial Team

Compare current US ÅSVANG, VANNAREID and Max & Lily mattresses. Separate fixed daybeds, roll-out trundles and two-mattress pull-out beds before buying.

Quick Verdict

  • For a compatible IKEA two-mattress daybed, compare ÅSVANG foam with the current VANNAREID spring model. They have different heights and feels.
  • For a compatible Max & Lily trundle, start with its 5-inch Twin. The maker does not guarantee that mattress in another brand's trundle.
  • A fixed upper daybed, a lower roll-out trundle and a pull-out double bed have different mattress constraints. Identify the mechanism first.
  • Count support height, mattress and stored bedding together. Never rely on forcing the bed closed or crushing the foam to make it fit.

For a daybed that converts, fit the mechanism before choosing the comfort layer. A mattress can feel fine when the bed is open and still be the wrong purchase because the lower tray will not close, the stacked seat is too high or the second mattress has a different footprint.

This US guide compares ÅSVANG 804.814.15, VANNAREID 605.691.69 and Max & Lily 183015-000 for different setups. We checked current manufacturer specifications and purchase policies on October 30, 2026. We have not operated these mattresses on a test frame or measured their comfort, sinkage or closing clearance. The calculations below are clearly marked planning examples.

Pull-out double daybedA second support section extends; two mattresses are rearrangedRequired mattress pair, each footprint and permitted individual thickness

A roll-out trundle can remain lower than the main bed. A pop-up model may raise its second deck, but that does not make every pair align: the deck heights and mattress heights both matter. Use that model's locking and support instructions. Do not assume two different Twin mattresses will meet flush.

The US HEMNES daybed frame, 303.493.29, is a useful example of the pull-out-double arrangement. IKEA offers it with a matched pair of ÅSVANG mattresses or VANNAREID mattresses. The pair is stacked for the single position and placed side by side for the extended bed. That is different from a separate low trundle that rolls under a fixed upper mattress.

A fixed daybed has one deck, a roll-out trundle adds a separate lower wheeled bed, and a pull-out double arrangement uses two mattresses side by side when extended.

ÅSVANG: the lower foam route for a compatible IKEA bed

The current ÅSVANG Twin is a 4¾-inch, medium-firm foam mattress. Its $129 US product-page price makes two mattresses $258 before the frame, delivery and taxes, using the checked prices. That calculation is mattress-only; it is not a complete daybed offer.

Consider it when the IKEA frame calls for this arrangement and you prefer the simpler foam route or want the lower stacked seat of these two current options. Two 4¾-inch mattresses have a nominal combined height of 9½ inches before covers and loading. That is not our measurement of how high a seated person will sit.

The outer cover can be removed and washed according to its label. The current page specifies warm machine washing and line drying. This is useful for a guest bed, but laundering the cover does not wash the foam interior or restore a worn support layer. Have a dry spare cover or allow enough drying time before a guest arrives.

VANNAREID: a spring alternative, with a version change to notice

The current US VANNAREID Twin, 605.691.69, lists 5⅛ inches, not the 4¾ inches shown in some older VANNAREID guides. Its footprint matches the current ÅSVANG figures above. Its $179 listed price means $358 for two, a $100 mattress-pair difference from two ÅSVANGs at the checked prices.

Choose this comparison when you specifically want pocket springs rather than an all-foam construction and the frame permits the current height. It is not evidence that VANNAREID is cooler, longer-lasting or more comfortable for your guest. Its firm label describes the manufacturer's positioning, not a result from our testing.

Two nominal 5⅛-inch mattresses total 10¼ inches, three-quarters of an inch more than the ÅSVANG pair. The extra stack can affect the sitting arrangement and how back cushions work. In the open bed, keep the pair matched rather than placing different-height models side by side and hoping the seam disappears.

Care is explicitly split between components: the current outer cover is washable, while the mattress and inner cover must not be washed. Do not turn a cover-care badge into permission to soak the spring assembly. Older article 404.867.35 and the current 605.691.69 should not be treated as interchangeable specifications.

Max & Lily: a more specific lead for its own lower trundle

For a compatible conventional roll-out trundle, the Max & Lily five-inch Twin is a concrete alternative to searching for the thinnest generic foam. Its 75 × 38.5 × 5-inch specification differs from the two IKEA models; it had a $219 direct-store catalog price and an available Twin variant at the check.

The Modern Farmhouse Twin Trundle recommends the brand's five-inch mattress and permits no more than six inches. Apply that statement to that trundle, not to every Max & Lily accessory or every lower bed on the market. The mattress page also expressly declines to guarantee other brands' trundles.

The removable washable outer cover is an ownership advantage when its supplied instructions are followed. The direct-store final-sale mattress policy makes advance fit work particularly important. If the intended user needs a softer surface than a slim mattress supplies, a lower tray's height limit may make a different bed more practical than another layer.

Work out the closing envelope

For a lower trundle, locate the lowest obstruction along its entire travel, not just the open space at the front. A rail, bracket or crosspiece farther underneath can be the limiting point. Include the effect of carpet or a rug if it changes how the wheels travel. Follow the manufacturer's permitted floor and assembly arrangement.

If measuring from the floor, count the assembled lower support's height from the floor to the mattress deck, then add the actual mattress and any permitted bedding retained during storage. Do not subtract support height a second time if the manufacturer already gives a maximum mattress thickness. The stated model limit remains the starting rule.

For a hypothetical example, suppose the lowest opening is seven inches above the floor, the lower support deck is one inch high, the expanded mattress is five inches and the retained bedding adds half an inch. The full stack is 6½ inches, leaving ½ inch of space. That explains why a five-inch mattress does not require only five inches under the main bed. It does not establish that half an inch is sufficient moving clearance for any real product.

Hypothetical trundle example: one-inch support plus five-inch mattress plus half-inch bedding totals six and a half inches; a seven-inch opening leaves half an inch. Use the real frame's limit.

Use the expanded, unloaded mattress for the closing check. A hand compressing a corner is not proof it will slide freely under the whole bed. If the mechanism catches, stop and identify the conflict rather than using the upper bed's weight or forcing a handle to crush the mattress. Remove loose bedding that the maker says should be stored separately.

Everyday sitting and occasional sleeping are different jobs

For a fixed upper daybed with no conversion constraint, the frame may permit a more conventional mattress. Choose for the intended sleeper and base rather than buying a four- or five-inch model solely because the furniture is called a daybed. The low profiles here solve specific stacked or under-bed arrangements.

For nightly sleeping on a slim daybed, assess the actual support arrangement, pressure at the shoulder and hip, edge when getting in and out, and whether the permitted mattress is comfortable for the person using it. An adult guest's short visit is different from using the same thin bed every night. There is no measured universal body-weight cutoff for our shortlist.

A topper can alter the sleeping feel, but it also needs storage and can change the stacked seat or lower closing height. Plan where it goes when the bed closes. Do not assume the two standard Twin sheets already in the cupboard will fit an IKEA footprint or the combined stacked arrangement neatly; measure the required pocket depth for the intended configuration.

Match the return policy to the order

IKEA US's mattress policy permits one exchange within 90 days, with condition and receipt requirements. It is not the same as a refund comfort trial. A lower-priced replacement gives the price difference on an IKEA refund card. Consider the logistics of returning two expanded mattresses as well as the replacement choice.

Max & Lily's direct policy separately states that mattresses are final sale. Do not borrow its general unused-furniture return wording. For a marketplace order, the actual seller and order terms determine the retailer route; a manufacturer link in this article does not verify an Amazon offer.

Photograph the bed label, confirm the exact article or SKU, and keep the receipt and care instructions. For a mismatched mattress, determine the seller's remedy before modifying a cover or forcing it into the frame. A correctly fitting replacement preserves more options than an improvised fit.

Sources, method and final choice

Our shortlist uses the linked current US product pages and manufacturer variant data. We separated the new VANNAREID article number from older specifications and kept prices on the same mattress-only basis. IKEA's current HEMNES offerings and the Max & Lily trundle page establish different mechanism examples, not universal rules.

Owner discussions about HEMNES mattress upgrades and five-inch Twin choices informed the comfort-versus-clearance questions. Country, model age and personal experience vary; those discussions did not verify current dimensions or prove a common defect.

For the compatible IKEA paired-mattress arrangement, choose between ÅSVANG's lower foam profile and current VANNAREID's higher spring construction. For a compatible Max & Lily lower trundle, research its five-inch Twin first. If neither arrangement works for the user or room, compare a separate folding guest mattress instead of forcing a thick mattress into the wrong mechanism.

Frequently asked questions

Is a daybed mattress different from a regular Twin mattress?

A fixed daybed can use an ordinary flat mattress if its exact frame permits the dimensions, height and base arrangement. A roll-out trundle adds a separate under-bed closing limit, and a pull-out double daybed may require two matched slim mattresses. These are different purchasing problems.

How thick can a trundle mattress be?

Use the exact trundle's mattress limit. The lower support, mattress and any bedding retained during storage must clear the lowest obstruction throughout travel. The cited Max & Lily Modern Farmhouse Twin Trundle recommends five inches and permits no more than six; that is not a universal limit for other beds.

Are the current ÅSVANG and VANNAREID the same thickness?

No. Current US ÅSVANG 804.814.15 lists 4¾ inches, while VANNAREID 605.691.69 lists 5⅛ inches. Both list a 38¼ by 74⅜-inch footprint. Older VANNAREID article numbers and buying guides may describe another version.

Can I put one thick mattress on a HEMNES pull-out daybed?

The cited US HEMNES arrangement uses two slim mattresses stacked in the single position and placed side by side when extended. One thick mattress does not reproduce that two-bed arrangement. Follow the exact frame's instructions rather than using a generic HEMNES modification as approval.

Can I store a topper on the lower mattress?

Only if the complete arrangement is permitted and still closes freely. A topper and protector use vertical clearance. Removing the topper for storage can be necessary, but its sleeping use must also comply with the mattress and frame instructions.

Can the VANNAREID inner mattress be washed?

No. The current US product page separates the washable outer cover from the mattress and inner cover, which must not be washed. Follow the care label for article 605.691.69 instead of applying another IKEA mattress's cleaning instructions.
