A useful pair needs the surface and feel in the name
This guide compares Beautyrest Black Series One Medium with Serta Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid Level One Medium, smooth top. Black’s current product page identifies a classic quilted surface, gel memory foam and Triple-Stranded Pocketed Coil technology. The selected Serta page describes a smooth-surface hybrid with memory foam and a zoned support design.
The pairing investigates surface and construction choices across different offers; it is not a declaration that every Black and Perfect Sleeper occupy one identical price tier. Use queen as the reference shopping size and compare current complete quotes. A shared Medium label does not cancel the differences in quilting, foams, support design or seller service.
Keep Black Medium Pillow Top and the separately named Black Hybrid outside this starting pair. On Serta’s side, X quilted/pillow-top and Level Two are separate configurations. A review that tested Plush or a quilted model does not establish the exact smooth-top Medium’s results. Our Beautyrest review covers the broader Black range; the Serta vs Sealy guide uses the same selected Serta alongside High Point II.

Black’s height comes from its manufacturer specification sheet, Series One Medium page. It does not apply to every Black feel. Serta’s current page does not provide a directly matching precise height; leaving that open is more useful than attaching an unrelated Perfect Sleeper measurement to it.
Quilting versus a smooth-top hybrid is the first useful question
Black is a relevant first stop if the quilted surface itself is the appeal. The selected X is the smooth-top route to investigate if you want the foam-comfort surface to define the comparison. Those are showroom directions, not promises that one bed always feels softer or lets every sleeper turn more easily.
On the actual Medium units, compare your usual side position, turning and sitting near the entry side. Notice whether the shoulders have room and whether the hips feel comfortably held. For two people, evaluate both sides together rather than assuming a single person’s preference solves the couple’s decision.
Retail model-identity check
Quilted Black or a smooth-top Serta hybrid?
Identify both models before applying the comparison. X, quilted, pillow top, Level Two and a retailer nickname can indicate a different product.
The named pair is not identified yet
Confirm X Hybrid Level One Medium with the smooth surface and the exact other model shown here. A current product title does not verify every older retailer nickname or seller-specific offer.
Checked October 31, 2026: Serta’s selected current page · Black Series One Medium. Serta’s current page omits a precise profile for the selected variant; separate Kendall dimensions are not silently treated as a verified current measurement. This is a comparison path, not proof of equivalent firmness, a universal winner or return acceptance.
The coil and zone names answer different questions. Black’s coil technology describes its support design; Serta’s five-zone language describes targeted regions in its system. “Three” and “five” are not competing scores, and neither figure supplies a common support test. A premium construction label is useful when it helps identify what you are trying, not when it substitutes for a preference or evidence.
Serta’s model name and documentation need to stay together
Serta still publishes the named X page while its broader assortment also introduces newer Perfect Sleeper terminology. The selected current X FAQ uses Q4 support language; separate checkout material contains the Kendall Medium nickname and an older-style dimensions table. A familiar family name therefore should not be used to transfer every old diagram or review to an unidentified offer.
The manufacturer-hosted checkout chart lists Kendall Medium at 13 inches, but the current canonical page does not publish that precise profile. We do not use that number as a confirmed measurement for every currently offered X Level One Medium. Get the current SKU and dimensional specification attached to the actual offer if sheet fit or finished height is decisive.
The practical consequence is narrow: do not order a sheet or choose a frame clearance from a generic Perfect Sleeper height range. Once the actual dimensions are identified, add support, mattress and topper depth once. Our specifications guide explains why height, foam density, feel and spring terminology cannot be collapsed into one quality rank.
What do the actual complete offers cost?
Black and the selected X current direct pages describe in-home service, but a retailer can package delivery differently. Record mattress price, same size, selected feel, foundation or base, delivery/setup and removal. If one quote includes an accessory bundle, use the actual amount you would pay, not a promotional “total value.”
Delivered-quote comparison
What would your selected setup actually cost?
Keep Black Series One Medium and the smooth-top X Level One Medium in the same size. Enter the actual mattress and selected service charges; an advertised bundle value is not a purchase price.
Extras may include delivery/setup, foundation, accessories or removal. Include each cost once. Use matching size and service choices; do not enter a promotional “total value” as a price.
Enter all four amounts from $0–$100,000. Missing or invalid amounts do not produce a total; missing services are not assumed to be free.
No live offers are fetched. Excludes tax, financing, ongoing ownership costs and potential return/exchange charges. Sources and seller-specific policy context are in the adjacent article. This is arithmetic using your quotes, not a price or eligibility guarantee.
The example values are illustrative arithmetic and do not represent current prices. Blank service costs remain unresolved; zero should mean no selected extra charge. A lower completed purchase total may matter to your budget, but it does not establish that the mattress wins pressure relief, support or lifespan. Potential return fees and financing charges remain separate from this purchase calculation.
The trial headline is not the whole return process
Beautyrest’s current return page states 100 nights from arrival for direct purchases and one return or exchange per household per 12 months. Its process uses LiquiDonate for instructions and pickup/donation handling. Other retailers have their own return eligibility and options.
Serta’s current selected product page describes a 100-Day In-Home Trial, recommends 30 days for adjustment and restricts that stated program to Serta.com purchases. The current trial page also uses a 100-night headline. The separate manufacturer checkout version still says 120 nights. That conflict is a reason to retain the actual written purchase terms, not to choose whichever number is larger.
Ask whether a comfort change means a refund, exchange credit or a paid exchange, and keep the answer with the receipt. A mattress trial does not automatically cover every accessory, base or sale condition. Record the delivery date and initial observations using the sleep-trial diary.
Cooling and longevity need evidence for the selected models
Black advertises Sleep Climate technology; Serta advertises graphite-infused and gel-memory-foam features. These identify the brands’ intended approaches. They do not supply a controlled overnight temperature difference between this Black Medium and the current selected X. Use comparable bedding and record room conditions when evaluating heat.
Likewise, a 10-year limited warranty is not a ten-year comfort-life measurement. Without a matched long-term wear study of these exact units, we do not declare a durability winner or convert customer anecdotes into failure rates. Keep an actual product preference separate from expectations created by an elaborate technology name.

Our decision and research method
Start with the surface you want, identify the current units, then compare complete offers. Black is the quilted route in this pair; the selected X is the smooth-top route. A different Serta collection or Black pillow-top calls for a different comparison.
We reviewed Sleep Foundation’s Black review, which includes an Extra Firm test, and its Perfect Sleeper review. Those external scores and the latter’s 120-night summary are not assigned to our current Medium pair. An owner question about a differently named Serta informed the model-name check; it supplies no current specification or prevalence estimate. Our new contribution is the surface/identity path, transparent source conflicts and complete-offer comparison.
