The useful pair: RestorePlus versus Midnight Core
The broad question “Purple or Helix?” becomes useful when the construction is clear. Purple RestorePlus combines a 3-inch GelFlex Grid with foam and a zoned coil support system in a published 13-inch profile. Helix Midnight Core uses memory-foam cushioning over coils and lists an 11.5-inch height. Both retain spring support, so the comfort material above it becomes a concrete difference to investigate.
Purple currently calls RestorePlus medium-soft; Helix describes Midnight as medium and markets it toward side sleepers. Those are manufacturers’ descriptions. They suggest where to start trying the beds, but they do not place the two mattresses on one calibrated firmness scale or establish a pressure-relief winner for your weight.
This pair also crosses product tiers. RestorePlus is a different offering from Purple Original, and Midnight Core is different from Midnight Luxe or Elite. We use queen as the size reference for the shopping process; compare the actual complete quotes in that same size before drawing a value conclusion. The Purple review and Helix review explain the wider lineups.
Purple vs Helix comparison chart
| Decision | Purple RestorePlus | Helix Midnight Core | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comfort route | Elastic GelFlex Grid plus foam | Memory-foam cushioning | A distinct surface choice above spring support |
| Support construction | Zoned coils | Pocketed coils | Coil presence alone cannot rank edge support or motion transfer |
| Published profile | 13 inches | 11.5 inches | RestorePlus adds 1.5 inches on the same foundation |
| Current maker feel | Medium-soft | Medium | Directional labels, not measured equivalence |
| Selected cover scope | Current standard product | Breathe Knit; selected cooling upgrades are separate | Keep cover and support upgrades in the model name and quote |
| Current direct trial length | 100 nights | 365 nights | Separate headline length from initial adjustment and eligibility |
Grid sensation or memory-foam cushioning?
RestorePlus is worth an early showroom visit if the grid itself is the reason Purple interests you. Its flexible lattice is a different material experience from sinking through a foam comfort surface. That distinction matters more than deciding in advance that all hybrids must feel similar because they contain coils.
Midnight Core provides the more direct route if you want to investigate a memory-foam hybrid. On both beds, spend time in your usual side position, roll onto your back, and get up from the side you would actually use. Notice whether your shoulder has room, whether your hips settle comfortably and whether you can turn without bracing. These are observation prompts, not predictions that one selected bed performs better.
Hybrid-surface decision path
Both have springs. What do you want above them?
Choose a surface to investigate and confirm the model scope. This routes your next comparison; it does not predict comfort, cooling or partner disturbance.
Try the two surfaces before ranking them
RestorePlus uses a 3-inch GelFlex Grid, foam and coils; Midnight Core uses memory-foam cushioning and coils. Compare the grid sensation, shoulder room and turning on each exact bed, using comparable bedding.
A useful next step: write down one reason you prefer each surface and one concern to resolve during the applicable trial. A surface preference is more informative than an unsupported brand-wide score.

For two people, test both positions at the same time when possible. Partner movement and usable perimeter space are whole-bed outcomes; the grid, memory foam and spring labels cannot supply a comparative motion score. If one partner loves the grid and the other dislikes its sensation, a larger size or a longer trial does not resolve that disagreement by itself.
Keep Luxe, Elite and cooling upgrades out of the Core result
Helix’s product navigation distinguishes the 11.5-inch Core, 13.5-inch Luxe and 15-inch Elite collections. A review of Midnight Luxe does not become a test of Midnight Core by removing “Luxe” from the name. Likewise, selecting a cooling cover or a support upgrade changes the configuration and potentially the total.
Use the exact bed’s page and quote. If a retailer only has Luxe on the floor, that visit can establish whether you want to investigate that specific Luxe; it cannot establish how the Core in this table feels. For a traditional spring alternative, our Saatva vs Helix guide distinguishes Classic, Midnight and Luxe.
Cooling also needs a narrower question. Purple advertises airflow through its grid; Helix offers cover options. An open material structure, a cool initial touch and overnight thermal comfort are different observations. We have no matched current test that ranks RestorePlus against the selected Midnight configuration, so we do not turn the brands’ different marketing comparisons into one chart.
Fit the bedding and the support, not just the room
The nominal 1.5-inch mattress-height difference changes the top of the bed on an unchanged base. Measure your actual floor-to-support height, then add the selected mattress and any topper. Check sitting and headboard clearance before assuming the taller bed is an upgrade. Use the bed-frame compatibility tool to organize the support requirements separately from this height calculation.
Purple’s product page lists closely spaced slats or a suitable solid surface and identifies traditional box springs as unsuitable. Its stretch bedding range explains why bedding that flexes with the grid matters. You do not need to infer that only one brand of sheets can work: compare actual pocket depth, stretch and protector bulk. A taut fitted sheet or thick pad can change what you are evaluating at the surface.
The current trial difference is meaningful
Purple’s product terms state 100 nights from delivery and ask for at least 21 nights before starting a return or exchange. The current Happy with Helix policy states 365 nights, a 30-day adjustment period and no return fee. This is the current direct snapshot, not evidence that an earlier 120-night order has automatically changed.

No order-level timing conclusion yet. Confirm both direct sellers and the current applicable terms; older or unidentified orders do not inherit this snapshot.
| Current published policy | Trial length | Adjustment and process |
|---|---|---|
| Purple direct | 100 nights | 21 nights before starting a return/exchange. |
| Helix direct | 365 nights | 30-day adjustment; current published program, not an older order’s promised extension. |

Save the policy attached to your purchase. Record the delivery date, the model and the seller, and start any request through that seller’s process. A warranty, return trial and accessory return window are separate programs. A mattress bought from a third party does not receive a direct-store promise merely because the model name matches.
Research offers without losing the model
For a useful quote, match size, cover, support options and the service you need. Standard shipping, carrying a bed upstairs and removing an old mattress are different jobs. Helix offers an in-home setup/removal option through its selected checkout route; record the chosen charge instead of assuming all deliveries include that work.

Our decision and evidence limits
Shortlist RestorePlus for a deliberate grid-surface trial. Shortlist Midnight Core for the memory-foam-over-coils route and evaluate the current complete offer. If your actual choice is a Luxe or another Purple, change the comparison before choosing a winner.
We reviewed Sleep Foundation’s broader Purple/Helix comparison for useful questions about materials, setup and policies. Its model mix and older policy summaries are not a shared test of this exact current pair. Owner discussions about trying Midnight Luxe and RestorePlus helped identify the surface-preference question; anecdotes do not establish defect rates or a performance winner.
